{DIY} Portable DVD Player Cover

Recently I purchased a portable DVD player for E to keep him entertained for his first ever trip by airplane, to visit K.  Of course, I had to make a cover for it to keep it nicely protected for the long journey.  I made the cover using quilting weight cotton fabric in this cute green and off white print and a layer of cream colored fleece for a little extra cushion to protect the DVD player from being marred by whatever happened to get thrown into the diaper bag.

Materials:

1/4 yd cotton fabric

1/4 yd fleece fabric

4″ piece velcro

Coordinating thread

Making the Cut:

Cotton:  (1) 10″ x 13″  and  (1) 10″ x 18″

Fleece:  (1) 10″ x 13″  and  (1) 10″ x 18″

Getting Started:

1.  Begin by placing the two cotton pieces wrong sides together making sure to line up 3 of the 4 sides.  Do this also with the two fleece pieces.  Stitch down the three sides with a 1/2″ seam.  Being sure to do a locking stitch at the beginning and end to prevent the seam from being pulled apart as you work.

2. Snip the bottom corners of both the cotton print and the fleece. This will make your corner nice and crisp.

2.  Turn the cotton fabric right sides out and slip inside of the fleece.  Pin around and leave a 2-3″ gap that will not be sewn so that you can pull the cover through and get everything going in the proper direction.

3. Sew along the top, making sure to leave your space for turning  your cover right side out.  Then, clip the corners as shown below without cutting through your stitches.  If you don’t do this, when you pull everything out and get things going the right way, you’ll completely understand why you should have done this. So, just trust me…you want to clip those corners.  I did it wrong a couple times when I was trying to go too fast and had to remove a bunch of stitching later to fix my mistake.  It is easier to get it right the first time.

Before cutting the cornerAfter cutting the corner

You are essentially notching the corner by cutting out a small square of fabric.

4. Now, pin the gap closed and stitch around the entire top. Once the cover is sewn, you can place, pin and stitch down your velcro.  Once that is completed, you are finished.

You can always translate this project into a cover for any of your electronics big or small just adjust the size of the pieces.  I’ve done covers using this same technique to make camera cases, diaper clutches and more.

Until next time,

L
